The oddness of the friend purge.
In our era of social media constant updates and the need post about every single aspect of our lives, the one thing I find weird and hilarious is the friend/followers purge post.
You know the one where someone announces no proclaims on social media usually on Facebook or Twitter that they must trim the fat, cull the herd and rid their account of followers.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with that but why the proclamation? It's not like being voted off of Survivor, is it? Lol!
This is genuinely fascinating especially on Facebook or Snapchat where no one can follow you without your permission while one can easily make their Instagram and Twitter account closed or private leaving you with the option of choosing who can follow you.
However, that's too simple and quiet, and we must rise above the noise. Some of my favorite friend purging is when said user states whoever doesn't reply this post in a certain number of days I shall unfollow talk about being an egomaniac. Even worse, people feed into the madness by responding to these outrageous demands and going one step further by encouraging said users to thrash all who dare not to reply to the friend purge. Talk about survival of the fittest!
Often what leads to the Purging Decree isn't that one has to many followers no that would make sense. No, its because said user has somehow accumulated too many followers/friends who fail to agree with the user on every single item. Especially the hot topics like race, politics, religion, sexual preference, climate change and gun control to name a few.
How did these odd couples come to be? Maybe they bonded over a video game, movie, sports team or article of clothing. Whatever, the case perhaps they connected over something and often that is the problem.
The internet and especially social media allows us to express opinions, likes and dislikes at will and most of the time that attracts us to people who feel the same way. This takes place at an unprecedented level no matter what a person is into you will find yourself quickly surrounded by people who think the same way you do.
Let's say you are into paper dolls. I'm quite sure one can easily find an online community of people who love all things paper dolls. Before long one may think that everyone in the world loves paper dolls or at least they are very popular. So if they run into someone who doesn't feel that way things may become tensed very quick.
Now apply that to something dangerous, and one can see how ugly things can be.
Which, brings us back to the friend purge. How dare these interlopers not agree with me.
